Tinnitus patients to be treated from home thanks to new ‘tech-savvy’ app

Tinnitus sufferers can now be treated by some of the UK’s leading specialist audiologists from the comfort of their own home, thanks to the introduction of a ‘hugely beneficial’ patient app.

Designed to ‘transform the treatment of tinnitus and hearing loss’, Tinnitus Desensitisation Therapy™ (TDT) is already one of the UK’s most successful clinical treatments from the leading provider of exclusive, evidence-based tinnitus treatments, The Tinnitus Clinic.

Now, following an initial fitting, patients will be able to be treated remotely thanks to the TDT app which works by connecting a hearing aid with a Telecare platform, allowing audiologists to communicate with the device – and patients – remotely.

Mark Williams, Chief Audiologist of The Tinnitus Clinic, said:

“This app can transform the treatment of tinnitus and hearing loss as it means patients can come into the clinic for their fitting appointment and then all other subsequent treatment steps can be undertaken from afar.

“Patients will need access to a Wi-Fi connection, but ultimately they will be able to have the rest of their treatment from home or the workplace because thanks to the app audiologists can video conference our patients and have full access to their treatment including algorithms and data.

“This is hugely beneficial, not only for patients we’re treating from a geographical distance or those with limited mobility, but it also means we can treat people when they’re out and about in their everyday situations – for example, a noisy workplace might need tailored support.

“We can alter their programme through the device to ensure they are getting the most out of their treatment and can experience the same level of functionality from home or when out and about. “In an increasingly connected society we expect this new tech-savvy treatment to be a welcome product for our patients in helping them manage their health and wellbeing.”

The treatment is currently available to patients with an apple product who can download the app and have access to Wi-Fi. Following an initial fitting, audiologists at the clinic can manage a patient’s symptoms and tailor treatment to meet ongoing needs through the Signia Styletto Connect hearing aid.

Specially designed by The Tinnitus Clinic, TDT therapy aims to redirect the brain’s attention away from the tinnitus signal so that, over time, patients become progressively less aware of their symptoms.

TDT is The Tinnitus Clinic’s most popular treatment and in recent trials two-thirds of those treated said their symptoms were ‘much improved’ or ‘very much improved’ after seven months.
