BTA Conference and the future for tinnitus services

  October 26, 2012

The Tinnitus Clinic was pleased to sponsor and attend the British Tinnitus Association’s Annual Conference at the end of last month. The conference was an excellent opportunity to meet with tinnitus researchers and other practitioners in this area, sharing latest developments and best practice.

This year’s Jack Shapiro Memorial Lecture was given by David Baguley PhD of Cambridge University Hospitals. Dr Baguley’s lecture gave an overview of the current state of tinnitus services in the UK and discussed some of the challenges ahead.
According to statistics quoted from Gander et al 2011, the majority of people with tinnitus will first see their GP and then an ENT specialist before eventually being referred on to an audiologist, either in a hospital or community setting. There may be advantages to increasing the number of people who have direct access to an audiologist, who may have more specialised knowledge in tinnitus. However, there was some concern that if ENTs were taken out of the process completely, then medical conditions causing the tinnitus may be missed.

At The Tinnitus Clinic, we now have Nitesh Patel as a Consultant ENT Surgeon, allowing our patients to access his expertise as well as the tinnitus treatment knowledge and experience of our team of audiologists.

Dr Baguley stressed the need for the future of tinnitus services to be evidence-based, effective, accessible, affordable, high quality, consistent and bespoke. We strongly believe that through the services we offer in our Clinic and our involvement in conferences such as this one, through funding research and training other healthcare professionals, we can be a key part of this future.
